Slugs for Slug Tuned Coils -- new page - APRIL 16-2017

** Just got in some Ferrite Slugs (NOS) (ABOUT 125)  from Surplus Sales of Nebraska. I am
evaluating and measuring and I will be selling some of these I bought in small quantities.
I also bought some 1/4 inch Straw Forms (about 40 or so)  for evaluation and I will be
selling some of these as well.
FIRST OF ALL.. I went and pulled a
slug out of an old SBE 34 HF
transceiver (from the 1970s)

The coil seen in the picture looks
to be a typical HF band coil.

I will use this SLUG to compare
these other slugs I have just
gotten  in from Surplus Sales of
Neb. -- See the pictures and
measurements I did below.
The slug I pulled from the SBE34 is shown pictured left and
below. It is going to give me some sort of inducatance reading
with my LCR measuring device (bought from ebay and from China).
Pictured above is the measurement I did of the test winding (about 5.5 turns (space wound) on the slug ICH-SLUG-3 from  Surplus Sales of Neb.
It is not quite as high a measurement as the Slug removed from the SBE34 but Im taking an educated guess that it would be a good substitute.
Surplus Sales of Nebraska calls this a White Slug. I saw no "white paint"markings on this slug -- I have written the tech person there to see if he can
give me some specific information on the "mix"and/or frequency coverage for this particular slug.

PRICE FOR THIS core is $1.25 each Canadian dollars or $.85 cents US dollars. **  (qty 15 ordered in March 25_2017 should be here soon! ) ****
Above the ICH-SLUG-4 (3/4inch long) Surplus Sales of Nebraska calls this a
RED slug. I saw no color coding on the slug. -- I will be selling this core at
the price of: $1.50 each Canadian dollars or $1.20 each USA dollars and
shipping can be done using economical letter mail for a $2 shipping rate
across Canada and about $5.50 dollars for USA shipments.

I measured it with my test winding and it is about .850 uh which is at least
twice the inductance of the test winding on the ICH-SLUG-3
- I am guessing
at this point but Id say (likely) this slug would be good for lower HF frequencies like
3.5 to 7 mhz perhaps. I am writing Surplus Sales of Neb (tech person) and he is
supposed to write me about this topic soon.

I will also do some research on the web  to see if I can come up with a standard
chart of mixes for slug tuned coils (if there is a guideline or concrete chart) of some
sort.

Straw Coil Forms for Tuning Slugs

Plasticized paper coil forms purchased from Collins. These were used in
conjunction with a powered iron slug in many vacuum tube radios from
1960-1980's.
-> The ICF-STW-2.5 (the light colored ones) above Im selling for $2 each (Canadian
Dollars or $1.50 each U.S. Dollars) - I can ship letter mail to anywhere in Canada for
$2 postage.
Straw Coil Forms for Tuning Slugs

-> The ICF-STW-2. (the grey  colored ones) above Im selling for $1.25  each (Canadian Dollars or
$1.00  each U.S. Dollars) - I can ship letter mail to anywhere in Canada for $2 postage and stateside
shipping would come to $5.50 US dollars (light packet AIR MAIL).
this page is under construction .. March 17 2017 and I will be adding
more to it soon. click here to go back to the

I NOW HAVE ordered in (March 25-2017) quantity 100 of the
red slugs 1/4 by 3/8 inch and my price will be $1.00 each USDollars
which includes testing and matching to your old broken slug (if
possible) --> CAN BE SENT LETTER MAIL ($2 across Canada)
QTY 25 of these  lighter colored 1/4 inch coil forms have been ordered in
(my price $2.00 each Canadian dollars and can ship letter mail for only $2
My initial testing on these Slugs type 4 (red coded) no actual red coloring on these ones I
ordered in. They measure about .8 uh with a 5 turn test winding of enamelled wire loose
wound on them. -- Im pretty sure these would be good for lower HF bands/frequencies
from about 1 to maybe 15mhz - a rough educated guess on my part.
The other cores I have in  the type 3 which the supplier (Surplus Sales of Nebraska) calls
WHITE -- I measured the test winding to be about .45 or so uh. and I (think) these would be
good for HF coils that are used above 15mhz and maybe all the way up into VHF.

I plan to do more measurements and comparisions to other coils and coil slugs.

You can see the SELLING PRICE I HAVE ON THEM. I will be selling in small quantities and I
can SHIP THEM LETTER MAIL for $2.05 postage across Canada and about $5.50 postage to
USA destinations. To DX it will be about $7.60 postage to other countries.
I will be bringing some samples of these
slugs to HAM RADIO FLEA MARKETS in
the Ottawa Valley ..
Smiths Falls -- May 13th
LOOK FOR ME IN THE VENDORS area.

Also CARP/West Ottawa early Sept.
Below pictures: some Coil forms and some measurements I made concerning the
permeability effects of the slugs on inductance. Simple measurements to determine
relative permeability.  -- When I get more time I will do some more detailed work.
